Stage 17 Profile

Stage 17: Gap -> Pinerolo – 179km

Today’s stage began as most do, with a breakaway forming at the beginning of the stage. The day’s break contained fourteen riders. Some of the notable riders were: Sylvain Chavanel (Quick Step), Edvald Boasson Hagen (Team Sky), Ruben Perez (Euskaltel-Euskadi). The first climb of the day was the category three Côte de Sainte-Marguerite. Chavanel was the first rider to cross the top of the côte. After the first climb of the day came the intermediate sprint. Sandy Casar (FDJ) was the only rider to attack for the sprint, every other rider remained in the saddle. When the peloton arrived, Mark Cavendish View full article »

2011 Tour de France: Stage 16 Recap

Stage 16 Profile

Stage 16:  Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux ->Gap – 162.5km

For almost the first 100km of racing, there was no successful breakaway. The peloton would constantly chase back each group that made an attempt to get away. The day’s breakaway consisted of ten riders including the likes of Thor Hushovd (Garmin-Cervélo), Edvald Boasson Hagen (Team Sky), and Tony Martin (HTC-Highroad). The large break didn’t even contest the intermediate sprint, Dries Devenyns (Quick Step) casually crossed the line first. There was also a chase group of three riders that never caught up with the larger breakaway, they crossed a few minutes after the first breakaway. The peloton didn’t contest the sprint either, when the approached it. This stage had only one categorized climb, the category two Col de Manse View full article »

Golden Mixtapes: XV’s Everybody’s Nobody

Golden mixtapes are mixtapes that we deem top-notch, and are a must listen to.

Rapper XV released his most popular mixtape Everybody’s Nobody on August 1st, 2009. This mixtape was what made XV more known, because before this, he was unheard of outside Kansas. The good thing about this mixtape is that not only are the beats really good, but his lyrics are awesome. View full article »

Mic Mang – Been There Heard That

Mixtape Cover

I was lucky enough to get a hard cover of Mic Mang’s second mixtape Been There Heard That about a week before its scheduled release date. So far, I am not impressed.

I am sorry to say this about my good friend Michael, but his second mixtape serves as a sophomore slump for this young rapper. Still, anyone who listened to his first mixtape can clearly see the true potential in Mic Mang. From the upbeat song “The Thrill” to the chill “Dreamin,’” I am also confident that his next mixtape will be even better than the first. View full article »

So we were originally going to do just the top 5 for older rock/alternative rock songs, but there are just so many good ones that we had to include 5 more songs that did not quite make the cut. The songs that just missed the cut make up my top 10 for this category. Feel free to comment with your own top 5, or point out any songs you feel I might have left out and should give a listen to. Here is what I think are the 5 best rock/alternative rock songs before 2000:

1. Smells Like Teen Spirit – Nirvana

“Smells Like Teen Spirit” is the first single and song off of Nirvana’s second album, Nevermind. This song is probably their most known, as well as most successful song. Many people first heard of Nirvana because of this song, it helped make Nirvana one of the most popular bands in the world at the time. “Smells Like Teen Spirit” peaked at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100. This was the first song I heard by Nirvana, and it left me wanting more. Kurt Cobain’s opening guitar solo, before Dave Grohl starts on the drums, draws my attention immediately and entrances me. The Krist Novoselic plays the bass perfectly. The guitar, bass, and drums go well together throughout the song. Cobain’s voice isn’t the greatest, but it goes so well with their style of music. Overall there’s nothing else I can say, other than that this is probably the best rock, or grunge, song. View full article »
